- Provincial labour laws: These differ from province to
province, but they all cover such issues as minimum wage, maximum hours,
allowable deductions, over time, vacations, severance pay, and termination of
employment. Your local labour ministry office can provide you with booklets on
all of these areas.
- Workers' compensation: If you run a
management-consulting service, you probably don't have to pay workers'
compensation. If you run a radioactive waste handling business, you probably
do. Check with your provincial Workers' Compensation Board to find out if your
business is covered.
- Human rights: Provincial human rights laws vary slightly
from province to province; In general, you can't discriminate in your hiring
and employment policies on the basis of an individual's religion, sex,
nationality or race, marital status, physical or mental challenge, or previous
criminal record.
- Tax laws: You can get a lot of information directly from
Revenue Canada by phoning your local office and asking for an Employer's Kit.
Revenue Canada will also assign your company with an employer's number that you
can use when submitting information to the ministry on wages, deductions, and
exemptions. It will also help you in calculating income tax, Canada Pension
Plan, and unemployment insurance deductions. Not to mention readings on tax
exemption forms, employment termination, and other tax-related issues.
